The QTI package must be in a single, compressed ZIP file to be imported.
Do Not Unzip: If the file you received ends in .zip (e.g., exam-generator-output.zip), do not extract or open it. Canvas requires the file in its compressed format.
Locate the File: Note the exact location where your QTI 2.1 ZIP file is saved.
This is the preferred method for faculty who want to create a central repository of questions for use in multiple assessments.
Access Item Banks: In the Course Navigation menu, click Item Banks.
(Note: If you don't see "Item Banks," you may need to enable it in Settings → Navigation first).
Create a New Item Bank: Click the + Bank button in the top-right corner.
Name the Bank: Give the new Item Bank a unique, descriptive title (e.g., "Unit 1 PA Item Bank"). Click Create Bank.
Open the Bank: Find the newly created Item Bank in the list and click its name to open it.
Start Import: Click the More Options icon (⋮) in the top-right corner of the Item Bank screen.
Select Import Content.
Upload the File: In the dialog box, drag and drop the QTI ZIP file or click Browse to select it from your computer.
Start Import: Click the Import button.
Verify: The questions will be added to the Item Bank. You can now use these questions to build any New Quiz in this course.
This is the fastest method to create a single assessment using all the questions from the QTI file.
Create a New Quiz: In the Course Navigation menu, click Quizzes and then click the + Quiz button.
Select New Quizzes: Choose the New Quizzes engine and click Submit.
Go to Build: Fill out the initial assignment details (name, points, etc.) and click Save to enter the Build screen.
Import Content: On the New Quiz Build page, click the Options icon (⋮) in the upper-right corner.
Select Import Content.
Upload the File: In the dialog box, drag and drop the QTI ZIP file or click Browse to select it from your computer.
Start Import: Click the Import button.
Verify: The questions will be loaded directly into your assessment structure on the Build page.
